Official/court finding: on December 21, 2021, after a six-day jury trial, Charles Lieber was convicted of two counts of making false statements to federal authorities, two counts of making and subscribing a false income tax return, and two counts of failing to file FBAR reports with the IRS. U.S. Senior District Judge Rya W. Zobel presided. The Department of Justice published the verdict the same day.
The convictions were 18 U.S.C. § 1001 (false statements), 26 U.S.C. § 7206(1) (false returns), and 31 U.S.C. §§ 5314/5322 (FBAR). The verdict is not titled espionage. See the China Initiative post.
